5th January

Every year on 5th January, the eve of Epiphany, “Glöckler” figures parade around town centres in the Salkammergut area. We watched as the parade came over the bridge in Gmunden and all the men paraded in the square, starting with the basic triangular hats to the more elaborate ones.

The idea is that these “Glöckler” figures dress in white, ring bells and wear these handmade hats to drive out bad spirits and bring salvation and blessing.

It’s certainly a unique spectacle to see but was rather cold!
