Bahrain National Day is celebrated every year on 16th December even though they officially declared independence from the UK on the 15th December 1971. Apparently, celebrating a day later means that it coincides with the coronation of the former ruler Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa to the throne.
The 16th is a National Holiday (which extended our xmas holidays – thanks!) and is celebrated in Bahrain with flags everywhere! Events are held throughout the island but as we were getting ready for our trip to Zanzibar, we were limited to a traditional music and dance display at the local shopping mall. This seemed to be where most people were anyway so I don’t think we missed out on much!
I wonder if we’ll be in Bahrain for the celebrations this year?!
